Marc Brackett, Ph.D., is Deputy Director of the Health, Emotion and Behavior Laboratory, Research Scientist in Psychology, and Faculty Fellow in the Edward Zigler Center in Child Development and Social Policy at Yale University.

The assertion that emotions matter is the foundation of both the research conducted in our laboratory at Yale University and our evidence-based approach to teaching social and emotional learning in schools. The RULER Approach teaches five key skills - recognizing, understanding, labeling, expressing, and regulating emotions - that are important for schools to develop in their students, and the adults involved in their education. In my presentation I will discuss how teaching emotion skills enhances classroom climate, decreases behavior problems, and increases academic performance.

A follow-up workshop will provide a more detailed overview of our skill-based, sustainable approach, including the teaching of RULER tools and strategies that can be used immediately in schools and classrooms.
